Every month at Level Up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a new ‘Lifeskill’ is presented to the students of our Youth Programs. From Tiny Champs (Ages 3-5), to Kids (Ages 6-8) and Teens (Ages 9-12) the Lifeskill of that month is discussed each class.
For April 2022, the youth students will be discussing the Lifeskill of Listening. How to listen using ones ears and eyes. How listening leads to learning both at Level Up Jiu Jitsu and at school. How to listen to parents and siblings at home.
Students are called upon to explain to their coach and peers how they use listening and what listening means to them. Halfway through the month after a few weeks of focusing on that particular lifeskill and utilizing it in class and at home, the student is tasked with completing their “Lifeskill Paper” at home in order to earn their Yellow Lifeskill Stripe.
For instance; a Tiny Champ might draw a picture about how they listen to mom at home. An older youth student will write a few sentences about how they listen to their teacher at school and coach at Jiu Jitsu and present the paper in front of the class practicing their public speaking skills, social confidence, and reading ability during their presentation.
The student will then earn a Yellow Lifeskill stripe, on the opposite side of their belt from their traditional technique stripes. To level up to the next belt each youth student will need to earn at least four yellow Lifeskill Stripes, for learning and practicing the various Lifeskills here at Level Up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is just as important as learning and practicing Jiu Jitsu itself!
