Grandmaster Pedro Hemeterio was one of the pioneers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. He was the first red belt promoted outside of the Gracie family and also was the first red belt promoted by Grandmaster Helio Gracie. He fought many no holds barred vale tudo matches during the 1940’s and 1950’s defending Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie family name before the rise of other famous fighters such as Carlson Gracie. Grandmaster Hemeterio also is credited with starting one of the first and most important Jiu Jitsu Federations in the state of São Paulo, the FPJJ. He is credited with being a founding figure for Jiu Jitsu in São Paulo which is now one of the worlds largest hotbeds for Jiu Jitsu academies and talent.
